The Peter Island-Athlon Challenge and youth development event will take place on Sunday, May 12th, 2013. Competitors have a choice of three different individual events:

• Islander Challenge “A”: Half-mile kayak, five-mile hilly mountain bike, two-mile flatter run
• Islander Challenge “B”: Half-mile swim, five-mile hilly mountain bike, two-mile flatter run
• Islander Challenge “2.0”: One-mile swim, ten-mile hilly mountain bike, five-mile hilly run

Crumplers Crowned Champs in National Sprint Triathlon

In the 12th annual National Sprint Championships, a sprint distance triathlon, husband and wife team Russell and Kat Crumpler cleaned up in their respective mens and ladies divisions in their first BVI triathlon competition. Russell completed the 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run in one hour and 19 minutes and 44 seconds and his wife the same distance in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 5 seconds. This event, which was held on Saturday at Sandy Spit, Soper’s Hole, saw record attendance with 10 in the men’s division, 7 in the ladies division, and 10 teams.

Last year’s individuals winner defended their titles but both lost their crowns. Richard Morgan, was second coming in 45 seconds after Crumpler and Adrian Dale was third, nipping at Morgan’s heels and only 24 seconds behind at the finish. 2012 ladies champ, Kay Reddy, was kept from the podium this year by a bevy of new triathletes and placed fourth. Gillian Howe was second, a mere 18 seconds behind Crumpler, and Natasha Ruscheinski was third.

2013 National Sprint Champs coming up

The 2013 National Sprint Championships is scheduled for April 20. The race will start at Sandy Ground boatyard, Soper’s Hole. The event will be a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run. The race starts at 7.15 a.m. and registration will be at the Tortola Sports Club on April 19 from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Entry fee is $25 per participant.

Spencer takes X-Tri title

Antony Spencer won the ninth annual BVI X Tri event at Smugglers Cove on Sunday morning, while Kay Reddy defended her title as the women’s champion. Mr. Spencer completed the triathlon in 53 minutes and 13 seconds. He was followed by Adrian Dale in 59 minutes and 26 seconds and Bryden Keeley took third in 1:23.50.

Tom Chapman and Tom Merrigan (and dog) took fourth and fifth place, respectively. Last year’s winner Andrew Thompson did not compete. There were five competitors in the Men’s Division, while two competed for the women’s title. Ms. Reddy took the top spot in Women’s Division with a time of 1:06.17, while Tia Beckmann took second in 1:12.25.
