The second annual Peter Island-Athlon took place on Saturday, June 14, with a host of swimmers, runners, riders, walkers, and zumbas, heading over to the exclusive resort for a morning of action-packed athletic activity to raise funds for the Family Support Network (FSN). $1660 was raised for FSN and records were set on the courses that are now set in stone for future triathlon and aquathlon endeavours on the island.
Antony Spencer won the men’s division romping through the 1000 metre swim, 5 mile mountain bike ride and 4 mile run in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 52 seconds. He beat Adrian Dale and Tim Clipstone to second and third respectively. They had left it to the final stages of the race to decide their placings – the growing heat finally got the better of Tim and Adrian struck like a lion on a wounded gazelle, for his second place. The Ladies division saw some close racing. Kathleen Brownsden won with a time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and 56 seconds. Sally Blackmore was second, just over 4 minutes behind Kathleen, Kim Takeuchi was third, just under 4 minutes behind Sally.
The Old Phat Pharts (Antony Spencer, Alastair Abrehart, Chris Smith) managed a convincing victory in the team division finishing 18 minutes ahead of the second placers, Just Garity (Gary Cottreau, Justin Smit, Amity Hill), leaving the home town Potties (Jules Potgieter, Chris Potgieter, Wilbert Mason) third and pondering their training regimen for the 2015 event.
Mark Doig topped the men’s division in the Aquathlon completing the 400 metre swim and 2 mile run in 25 minutes and 38 seconds. Joe McIvor was second and Adam Dmonte third. Tash Ruscheinski won the Ladies division with an unsurprisingly fast swim that gave her some breathing room for the run. Sarah Hayes was second, Ana Graziosi, third.
Dom Munro won the Kids Long Tri Course and Nicolas Haycraft, the shorter course.
The Zumba session organised by Musonda Poole drew a good turnout and kept the music pumped on the finish line.
