tubes_run-250x167Andrew “Tubes” Thompson won the 2007 BVI X TRI last Saturday. The off-road triathlon took place in Smugglers Cove.

The triathletes began the race with a short run from the beach and then dived into the pristine water to head for the first marker. The swimmers completed a triangular course back to the beach, ran round the beach marker and then back in again for a second lap.
Looking mean Kevin Drysdale was the first out of the water, completing the swim in just over 10 minutes. Followed by the TSC TRI champion, Andrew Thompson, who completed the swim in 11 minutes.

The athletes took to their mountain bikes and headed up the muddy slopes to Steel Point. Drysdale maintained his lead over Thompson but then took a wrong turn up to Belmont allowing Tubes to take command of the race.

Drysdale’s luck was confounded yet again, when coming down Belmont he suffered a rear puncture, allowing Simon Cook to take second place.

Tubes held his lead for the remainder of the course, taking a commanding time in the running race.

Kay Reddy won the competition for the ladies, completing a solid all-round-performance and breaking the record for the fastest transition times. Richard White and Hannah Piggot won the team medal with Team Deloitte.

Tubes now leads the Tri season with two solid wins. The next triathlon in the series is the Steelman, an Olympic distance race, on the 6th of October.
