Ghiorse vanquishes young pretenders

Chris Ghiorse won the men’s title in the 2013 BVI Steelman vanquishing young pretenders with a finish time of 2:37:05. Gillian Howe won the ladies field with a time of 2:59:34 and all-girl G.I. Janes (Liezl Van Der Schyf, Lisa Adamson and Kat Crumpler) cleaned up the teams division with a fast time 2:32:01.

Potgieter and Spencer top first Semi Steel

In the inaugural Semi Steel, Jules Potgieter, who is currently dominating the women’s field in the 10k running series, completed her first triathlon and topped the women’s division. Seasoned old dog Antony Spencer won the men’s division.

Calendar changes – Semi-Steel, followed by BVI Steelman

To allow potential competitors to better prepare for the crown jewel of the BVI triathlon calendar – the Olympic distance BVI Steelman – events and dates have been changed. The BVI Steelman has moved to December 7, replacing the Santathon; on the original date for the BVI Steelman, November 16, there will be a Semi-Steel, half the distance of the BVI Steelman but on the same course.

Summer Sunset Series

The BVI Triathlon Federation will be holding an unofficial bonus Summer Series for training and fun during June and July – the Spring Sunset Series. The races will be duathlon-style and be either Swim/Bike, Bike/Run, or Swim/Run. The races will be held on the National Sprint Championships course and will be the Sprint distances – 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike, five-kilometre run. The races, for individuals only, will start Saturday evenings at 5pm at Sandy Spit, West End, and should only take about 45 minutes.
