Eighth X-Tri at Smuggler’s Cove

The 8th annual BVI XTri, a triathlon held in the off-road wilds of Smuggler’s Cove and Belmont, will take place on Saturday, March 10. Michael “Balls of Steel” Ellis will be vigorously defending his title after winning the event last year beating a surprised and shocked Andrew “Tubes Thompson by one minute and twenty-two seconds. Ellis has made it no secret that he intends to destroy Tubes’ 2009 record in his swan song event in the BVI; the target is 47 minutes and 27 seconds, Michael’s time last year was 48 minutes and 50 seconds.

Youth Development Event #1 – Report & Results

On Saturday 25th February, 38 young and enthusiastic competitors made the BVI Triathlon Federation’s (BVITF) first youth development triathlon a success. Children under 15 with interest in any aspect of the triathlon – swim, bike, or run – were encouraged to participate regardless of their individual ambitions.

Five races were held in 80 minutes: three relay heats and two individual heats.

In the fourth annual TSC Tri and second battle for the Corporate Cup introduced last year, Ogier beat Appleby by 57 seconds to wrestle the Cup from Deloitte who fielded three teams in a bid to keep it in their boardroom. Ogier, with Simon Schilder swimming, Gareth “I’m just off the couch” Thomas cycling, and Claire-Louise Whiley running, won with a time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 12 seconds. Deloitte 1 was third.

Youth Development – Event #1

February 10, 2012

This is a fun introductory event to triathloning for all children under 15. The races will be formatted at 1/20th of an Olympic distance (75 meter swim, 2000 meter bike, 500 meter run). There will be relay and individual races. These races will take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Form a team or do all three events.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 25th, at Nanny Cay near PegLegs Restaurant.

TSC Tri – 2012 Season Opener

This fun fundraiser for the Tortola Sports Club is open to individual men and women, Open Teams and Corporate Teams and consists of a 750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run. Olympic distance BVI Steelman October 22

The BVI Steelman, an Olympic distance triathlon and the most challenging event on the BVI Triathlon Federation calendar, will take place at Beef Island on Saturday, October 22. The event, open to 3-person teams as well as individuals, comprises a one-mile swim held in Well Bay, a 25-mile bike race lapping the road from the airport to the ramparts of Beef Island Bridge, and ends in a six-mile run along the roads and trails of Beef Island heading towards Minines.

Chris Ghiorse won the 2010 BVI Steelman with a time of 2:32:07. Kay Reddy won the Ladies with a time of 3:06:05, top team was the Governor’s team.

Ghiorse, Pettigrew and MZS top 2011 National Sprint Champs

Chris Ghiorse won the individual men’s, Carolina Pettigrew the individual women’s, and MSZ the team competition, in the 2011 National Sprint Champs held on Sunday June 12, out of the Sandy Ground Boatyard at West End. Ghiorse and Pettigrew recorded times of 1:13:36 and 1:30:48 respectively in the sprint distance event with a 750m swim, 20k ride and 5 km. Antony Spencer, last year’s champion, was a mere 19 seconds behind Ghoirse having closed the gap on the run after Ghiorse finished the bike ride with a gap of one minute and 23 seconds.

2011 National Sprint Championships

The 2011, like 2010 National Sprint Championship, will be held completely on the flat. The event, to take place on Sunday June 12, will be held out of the Sandy Spit Boatyard at West End and will be sprint distance: swim, 750 m (0.47 mi); ride, 20 km (12.4 mi); run, 5 km (3.1  mi).

The 750m swim will take place in Soper’s Hole, the 20k ride will head to Struggling Man’s Cafe in Sea Cow’s Bay and back, and the 5k ride will be to Big Ben’s Superette and back. The race will start at 7.30am.

The date for the National Sprint Championships has changed to Sunday, June 12th. Please change your diaries! This event is completely on the flat, read last year’s report here. The event is open to individuals and teams, check out last year’s results and times.
