Ogier wins Corporate Cup in 2012 TSc Tri

In the fourth annual TSC Tri and second battle for the Corporate Cup introduced last year, Ogier beat Appleby by 57 seconds to wrestle the Cup from Deloitte who fielded three teams in a bid to keep it in their boardroom.   Ogier, with Simon Schilder swimming, Gareth “I’m just off the couch” Thomas cycling, and Clare-Louise Whiley running, won with a time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 12 seconds.  Deloitte 1 was third.

Richard Morgan, finally finding his form after a year on-island, won the Men’s individual with a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes and 12 seconds, and Kay Reddy, shaving 3 seconds off her time last year, retained her Ladies title.  Barneys Rubble won the Open Team category and was also the fastest team of the day with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

Fourteen teams took part in the event that saw the swim took place off Baugher’s Bay beach with two laps including a quick sprint ashore to round a mark before heading back into the sea for a second lap.  The cyclists then headed West to a turning mark about 500m beyond Ocean Reef Villas and then back to the Tortola Sports Club (TSC) where runners completed the sprint triathlon with a 5k run that took them East to Port Purcell roundabout and then into the ‘banking district’ of Road Town and a finish back at the TSC.

Next event on the BVI Triathlon Federation’s calendar is a Youth Development event to be held at Nanny Cay on February 25, with registration starting at 8am and the racing starting at 8.30am.

This is a fun introductory event to triathloning for all children under 15. The races will be formatted at 1/20th of an Olympic distance (75 meter swim, 2000 meter bike, 500 meter run). There will be relay and individual races. These races will take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Form a team or do all three events.  Bikes and helmets will be provided.  Age groups will be 11 and under, and 12-14 (based on child’s age, Dec 31st 2011). For any questions please contact Chris Ghiorse: 542-1981, [email protected]

The next adult event will be the 8th annual BVI XTri, a triathlon held in the off-road wilds of Smuggler’s Cove and Belmont, on Sunday, March 10.  Michael “Balls of Steel” Ellis will be vigorously defending his title after winning the event last year and beating a surprised and shocked Andrew “Tubes Thompson by one minute and twenty-two seconds. Ellis has made it no secret that he intends to destroy Tubes’ 2009 record in his swansong event in the BVI; the target – 47 minutes and 27 seconds.
